Screenshot sizes

App Store screenshot sizes for every iPhone and iPad display.

Apple groups App Store screenshots by display class rather than by individual device. Each class accepts a small set of exact pixel dimensions, and uploading a file that misses those dimensions by even one pixel will be rejected at submission time.

This page lists the accepted portrait and landscape dimensions for every current iPhone and iPad display class, the file format rules that apply to all of them, and how App Screenshot Magic exports files that match.

How Apple groups screenshot sizes

App Store Connect does not ask for a screenshot per device. It asks for a screenshot per display class — a group of devices that share a screen size. The 6.9-inch class, for example, covers the iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro Max, and accepts the same dimensions for both.

  • Each display class accepts one or two exact pixel dimensions.
  • Dimensions are listed width x height, so portrait and landscape are separate values.
  • A screenshot set is defined per display class per localization.

This means a listing in 10 languages targeting one iPhone display class needs 10 screenshot sets, not 10 files.

You usually need fewer sets than you think

Apple scales a single uploaded set down to smaller display classes automatically. In practice most apps upload only the largest iPhone size they support, plus the largest iPad size if the app is universal.

  • Upload the largest iPhone display class and let smaller classes inherit it.
  • Upload a separate iPad set only if the app ships an iPad build.
  • Override a specific class when the automatic downscale crops something important.

Overriding is worth it when your screenshots contain small text: downscaled 6.9-inch copy can become hard to read at 4.7-inch.

File format rules that apply everywhere

The dimension rules change by display class, but the file rules are the same for every screenshot you upload to App Store Connect.

  • Accepted file types: JPG, JPEG, or PNG
  • Screenshots per display: 1 to 10
  • Colour space: RGB (sRGB or Display P3)
  • Transparency: Not allowed — flatten the alpha channel

Transparency is the most common rejection cause. Export from a design tool with the alpha channel flattened against a solid background.

How App Screenshot Magic exports

The default export target is 1284 x 2778 PNG, which matches the iPhone 6.5-inch display class and is accepted by the 6.7-inch class as well. Additional presets cover the other common iPhone classes.

  • iPhone 6.5": 1284 x 2778
  • iPhone 6.7": 1290 x 2796
  • iPhone 6.7" Pro Max: 1320 x 2868
  • iPhone 6.5": 1242 x 2688
  • iPhone 5.5": 1242 x 2208

Every generated file is written at exact pixel dimensions with no transparency, so it can be uploaded without a resize step.

Frequently asked questions

What size should App Store screenshots be?
It depends on the display class you are uploading to. For current iPhone listings the 6.9-inch class accepts 1320 x 2868 or 1290 x 2796 pixels in portrait, and the 6.5-inch class accepts 1242 x 2688 or 1284 x 2778. App Screenshot Magic exports 1284 x 2778 PNG files by default, which covers the 6.5-inch iPhone display group.
Do I need to upload screenshots for every iPhone size?
No. App Store Connect scales a single uploaded set down to smaller display classes, so most apps only need the largest iPhone size and, if the app supports iPad, the largest iPad size. You can still upload a bespoke set per display class when you want tighter control over how each one looks.
How many screenshots can I upload per display?
Apple accepts between one and ten screenshots per display class per localization. Most listings use between four and eight, because only the first two or three are visible before a user has to scroll.
What file formats does the App Store accept?
JPG, JPEG, and PNG. Files must be flattened with no alpha channel or transparency, and must use an RGB colour space. PNG is the safest choice for screenshots containing text and flat UI colours.
Can screenshots have rounded corners or device frames?
Device frames are allowed and common, but the uploaded file itself must be a rectangular image at exact pixel dimensions with no transparency. If your design has rounded corners, flatten them against a solid background before export.

Export screenshots at the right size automatically

App Screenshot Magic generates App Store screenshots at exact display-class dimensions, so files are ready to upload without a manual resize or format conversion step.
